Finishes: where to save and where it never pays
Not every line item behaves the same way when you cut 20%. Some show, some never do.
Cutting a budget is unavoidable. What separates a good cut from a bad one is knowing which line items can be replaced later without breaking everything around them.
Save on paint. A well applied mid range paint lasts seven years and repaints cheaply. The gap to the premium range shows by year two and costs three times as much.
Save on kitchen cabinets, not on worktops or built in appliances. Swapping cabinet doors is a morning; swapping a worktop means dismantling the whole kitchen.
Do not save on plumbing, electrics or waterproofing. These three sit underneath everything else: replacing them later means destroying finishes that were perfectly good.
Do not save on windows. They combine thermal insulation, acoustic performance and weather tightness in a single element, and they are the costliest and most disruptive thing to change.
The rule is simple: save on what is visible and replaces itself, never on what is hidden and drags the rest along with it.
